CASTELLARE DI CASTELLINA PRESENTS TORRE ALTA 2023

The new Chianti Classico that seeks excellence.

Castellare di Castellina presents Torre Alta, the new Chianti Classico DOCG from the historic Chianti winery, made from Sangiovese vines over 30 years old. This absolute novelty arises from the desire to aim ever higher, just like the iconic tower of Castellare di Castellina that dominates the estate. Torre Alta, made from pure Sangiovese, debuts with the 2023 vintage, resulting from a careful selection of the best grapes harvested from the most suitable vineyards, located at a privileged altitude of 450-510 meters. The soil rich in marl and limestone, perfect exposure, and constant ventilation are key factors that contribute to the excellent quality of the grapes.

Torre Alta has a ruby red color and offers a fragrant, fresh nose with pleasant hints of red fruit, licorice, currant, and a light touch of vanilla, typical notes of Chianti Sangiovese. On the palate, it is round, soft, savory, and reveals a pleasant sweetness. Acidity and persistence characterize a very appealing aftertaste.

This Chianti Classico has good structure and longevity, yet it proves to be very versatile. It is ideal for pairing with stews, first and second courses of red meat and game, and medium-aged cheeses. Torre Alta is a wine that looks far ahead to achieve excellence while respecting the territory and the Tuscan tradition.

The little bird on the label
The iconic little bird of Castellare also appears on the Torre Alta label, symbolizing the company’s commitment to sustainable viticulture. It is the Great Tit, famous for its melodious song that can be heard by scanning the QR code on the bottle. The Great Tit loves to nest in trees near the vineyards because it is fond of grape berries and, especially during the harvest, flits between the rows to feed on the grapes that fall to the ground. It also feeds on berries and insects found among the vines. It is easily recognizable by its bright yellow plumage, marked with a black stripe.

The 2023 harvest
As in all of Italy, the spring of 2023 was very rainy in the Chianti Classico, requiring more careful and attentive work in the vineyard to prevent any fungal diseases. The heat of July and August did not stress the plants, as the water reserves were more than sufficient. Additionally, due to the warm season, no insect attacks were reported. The good temperature range between night and day during the end of August and the early part of September allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. The grapes brought to the winery were healthy and of high quality. The 2023 Chianti Classico reveals great freshness in the glass with soft, velvety tannins.

The winemaking process
The manual harvest of the grapes took place in the first week of October, and the bunches, placed in small crates to avoid crushing, were immediately transferred to the selection table for sorting and destemming. The alcoholic fermentation took place in steel tanks, while aging occurred in French oak barrels of 2.5 and 5 Hl for 7 months. After the period in wood, the wine continued to age in the bottle for another 7 months before being released on the market.
